For over twelve years, we've been building technology that strengthens communities, supports local businesses, and helps neighbors in need across Western North Carolina and beyond.
Ted & Flori Pate
We met in advertising school in Atlanta, worked as art directors at agencies in Portland, Oregon, and eventually landed in Asheville. In 2013, after we were both laid off from corporate jobs, we entered Asheville Startup Weekend with a wild idea: a platform that connects people to the local businesses and resources that make their community special. We won that weekend, and Dig Local was born.
What started as Asheville's App has grown into a mission. Over twelve years of building software, launching nonprofits, and partnering with our neighbors, we've learned that the best technology gets people off their screens and into their communities.
Dig Local
Dig Local is our flagship platform, connecting residents and visitors with the businesses, events, and experiences that make a place worth living in. From live music listings to local shops, Dig Local exists to support the people pouring their hearts into their communities. Asheville Live Music is part of that vision.
Food Connection
In the early days of Dig Local, Flori learned a disturbing truth: restaurants, universities, and venues across Asheville were throwing away enormous amounts of perfectly good, chef-prepared food. She couldn't let that stand. In December 2014, Flori co-founded Food Connection to rescue that surplus food and get it to people who need it.
Food Connection became a 501(c)(3) in 2016 and has since rescued and delivered over 900,000 fresh meals to seniors, working families, and veterans while diverting 400+ tons of prepared food from the landfill. Their free food truck "Fran" distributes meals five days a week across Buncombe, Henderson, and Madison counties. Flori's advocacy helped pass the federal Food Donation Improvement Act, signed into law in 2023.
Active Alamance
Active Alamance is a community app for Alamance County, NC that puts every park, trail, community center, event, and family-friendly activity in one place. Built on the same Dig Local technology, it's designed to help people discover their own backyard and stay connected to what's happening locally.
wncHelp Coming Soon
wncHelp is our next chapter: a collaborative digital platform for Western North Carolina focused on food insecurity and mental health support. It's a central hub where nonprofits, neighbors in need, volunteers, and funders can find each other, reduce duplication of services, and build a more resilient region together.
Everything we build comes from the same place: a belief that technology should bring people closer, not pull them apart. We're proud to call Asheville home, and we'll keep working to make this community stronger.

About the Site
Asheville Live Music is an independent event discovery platform for live music and entertainment in the Asheville, NC area. We are a small team that picks the venues we cover, writes the venue profiles, and curates what shows up on the Site. Events may be cancelled, rescheduled, or changed without notice by the venue or organizer. Always confirm details directly with the venue or ticket provider before making plans. We are not responsible for any loss, inconvenience, or expense resulting from reliance on information displayed on this Site.
